Art in the Garden (June 2009)
In conjunction with The Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, Bridgwater College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington became home last week to a vast number of sculptures and art works, designed and created by members of the Guild. The work was extremely impressive, and created a perfect accompaniment to the ambiance of the Walled Gardens.
The exhibition included sculpture and garden pottery around the gardens, and ceramics amongst the exotic planting in the glass house. Work more suited to an interior space was staged in the architecturally stunning Clifford Hall, part of the old Priory buildings just outside the gardens.
Visitors were able to enjoy the tranquillity and stunning features of the Walled Gardens whilst they took in the impressive art works around the gardens. “There is a lot of unusual sculpture here and some interesting topiary”, said visitor Sue Robertson. “It has been lovely to look around and I give it ten out of ten.”
Makers taking part included Oliver Strong, with his spectacular metal sculpture, which included the ‘Sea Horse’ and the ‘Moonlight Vase’, John Candler’s striking work in stone and glass, and textiles by Tricia Burridge (Master of the Guild).
