Classic Gardens in Cannington (March 2009)

The Walled Gardens of Cannington have become one of the Classic Gardens of Somerset, as designated by the Countryside Heritage and Tourism Service of South Somerset District Council. "This is a very prestigious honour", says Jane Wagner, Business Development Manager at Bridgwater College. "And we were accepted on our very first application!"

The Gardens are now featured in the ‘Classic Gardens of Somerset 2009' leaflet alongside the likes of Barrington Court and Hestercombe Gardens - illustrating the wonderful garden attractions in Somerset's locality.

To be eligible as a classic garden listing, the garden must present: a special interest in terms of its originality; a special botanical interest in terms of its plant diversity; a special architectural interest in terms of its structure and layout; and a special educational interest in terms of the information made available to the public.

The Walled Gardens of Cannington meet all these criteria, after undergoing extensive redevelopment over the last few years, and now boasts classic and contemporary features such as: the ‘hot' herbaceous border; the blue garden; a sub-tropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. The Gardens also have a plant sales area and a plant shop, and brand new tea rooms are opening this month - serving light refreshments for garden visitors.

There are a number of events planned for throughout the year, some of which can be seen in the Classic Gardens' leaflet. If you are interested in volunteering with work at the garden, please call 01278 655042.
