New Horticultural Group a hit! (March 2011)
Last Saturday was a glorious sunny day, which set the mood perfectly for the launch of the Cannington Horticultural Group at The Walled Gardens of Cannington. Over 30 people attended the launch which began with a short introductory talk from Neil Bain, Programme Manager for Horticulture and Floristry at Bridgwater College, Chris Hill, Manager at The Walled Gardens of Cannington and Jayne Alcock, Head Gardener.
Neil explained that this new group has been formed to share knowledge, information and ideas on horticulture and floristry using the facilities and expertise at Bridgwater College's Cannington Centre. Jayne talked about the volunteering opportunities in the gardens especially with the developments of the new rose garden area.
The group were treated to free entry to the gardens to explore the recent developments, many visiting for the first time. Neil provided a floristry demonstration, creating a series of different floral designs, and Marie Glover, business owner of Natural Therapy, presented a talk on herbs, their culture and history, as well as their medicinal benefits.
"It was great to see so many local people attending the meeting", said Neil. "We have some fantastic facilities and expertise here at the College and this group will be the ideal way to share this knowledge with local people with a passion in Horticulture and Floristry."
The group will meet every third Saturday in the month at Clifford Hall, next to The Walled Gardens of Cannington, and the next meeting will be on Saturday 16 April from 11am. The topic for April will be tropical-with a walk around the glasshouse for the horticulturists with Nigel Cox; and for the flower arrangers/florists there will be a workshop on tropical plants-weaving, plaiting and manipulating palm leaves.
