Walled Gardens are Open (October 2008)
Bridgwater College's Cannington Centre opened its Walled Gardens for a free open day for Cannington Residents last weekend. With the sun shining, visitors wandered around the gardens from the time it opened, to the time it closed. The most common reaction as people entered, was "wow!".
The gardens have been redeveloped over the past two years and many of the residents who hadn't visited the gardens for a while were bowled over by its beauty. Bridgwater College's students have worked really hard on the redevelopment project. The Horticulture courses include garden duties sessions, where students work alongside the garden staff. "Without the students we would not have developed the gardens this far. They've been fantastic; really getting stuck in and learning a great deal at the same time", says Andre Gardner - Grounds Manager. Many student groups have been involved in the redevelopment, ranging from entry level students through to degree level students.
Despite being the end of the summer, the gardens are still full of colour; especially the dry garden and the sub-tropical walk, with the blue garden by far the favourite of most of the visitors. The garden's glasshouse was also open for the visitors to stroll around and enjoy the fine botanical plant collection. With plants from the garden on sale at the garden shop, visitors were keen to buy the locally-grown products.
